Additions are the most basic of mathematic operations. However, as a young student, adding can be a tricky skill to learn. If you have a child at home, and would like to help them learn this crucial operation, follow the tips below.

How to Help a Child with Additions

Start with the Basics

It’s difficult for someone to learn anything if they don’t know the basics. For that reason, it’s important that you teach your child what numbers are, what adding means, and what it’s good for. On that same note, ensure they know how to count comfortably.

Challenge Them a Bit More

A great and simple way to introduce your child to sums without overwhelming them is to ask them to skip count. You can tell them to count in 2s (2, 4, 6, 8…) or 3s (3, 6, 9, 12...), so they can get a sense of what adding is.

Use Objects They can Count

It’s more challenging to learn to add if you don’t have a tangible way to do it. To make it easier for your child, make use of several quantifiable objects, such as apples or toys. Ask them to count how many there are, add more, and ask them to count again so they understand how sums work.

Make Sure They Practice Often

As a last tip, make sure your child practices adding often. This way, they’ll understand, learn, and develop this important mathematical skill. To that end, you can hand over practice sheets that they can complete. Just make sure they don’t use a calculator or their fingers to add!
